Pensoft joins EU Horizon project BEAGLE to support biodiversity monitoring

Pensoft will strengthen BEAGLE’s mission for reliable biodiversity monitoring through a distinctive visual identity and innovative communication tools to amplify the project’s results.

Biodiversity is changing rapidly worldwide, driven by threats such as invasive species and fragmented restoration efforts. To meet the targets of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and the Global Biodiversity Framework, countries need large-scale, timely and high-quality data to track the status and trends of key species and habitats. This monitoring is essential to prevent further deterioration by 2030 and to target restoration and nature-based solutions where they are most needed.

In response to this challenge, the new EU Horizon project BEAGLE, named after Darwin’s ship as a carrier of critical biodiversity information, aims to deliver next-generation biodiversity monitoring across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems in the EU and Associated Countries. It will do so by generating new data and mobilising already existing ones, using AI to process them, turning them into indicators and maps that directly inform and measure progress on EU policy targets.

Officially started on 1 October 2026, the Horizon Europe project BEAGLE will run for four years. Coordinated by Aarhus University, it brings together 17 organisations from 12 countries to turn fragmented data into policy-ready evidence and ensure the outputs drive real change.

BEAGLE is structured around four core objectives:

  1. Strengthening the EU’s biodiversity monitoring network;
  2. Operationalising high-throughput in situ observation tools;
  3. Integrating validated data into open platforms and modelling workflows;
  4. Developing a knowledge framework to support ecosystem recovery.

As Toke Thomas Høye (Aarhus University), the coordinator of BEAGLE puts it:

BEAGLE builds on the strong foundations of previous European biodiversity initiatives, bringing together existing data, networks, and technologies to deliver up to one billion species records, over 1,000 sensors, thousands of eDNA samples, Essential Biodiversity Variables, and policy-relevant indicators. Our ambition is to turn these results into practical tools that continue to support biodiversity monitoring, restoration and decision-making long after the project ends.

Pensoft’s role

As the partner responsible for communication, dissemination, and exploitation, Pensoft will lead the strategy for raising BEAGLE’s visibility among scientists, practitioners, policymakers, and the wider public, while ensuring the project’s outputs reach the audiences best placed to use them. This includes designing and maintaining the project’s website and social media channels and coordinating materials such as newsletters, videos, and infographics to communicate BEAGLE’s progress and findings in an accessible way. Pensoft will also support the dissemination of scientific results through open-access publishing, in line with its long-standing commitment to open science.

Pensoft has always been a defender of open access to biodiversity data. As such, we are happy to help maximise BEAGLE’s impact in turning biodiversity data into meaningful action. The project connects monitoring technology, science, and policy to create a more integrated understanding of how our environment is changing and how we can better protect and restore it.

Science Communication in Support of SDGs: Pensoft at the UN’s Science Summit 2024

Boris Barov, Project Manager at Pensoft, talked about open-science publishing and science communication as a stepping stone towards the fulfilment of biodiversity targets.

Last September saw a showcase by Pensoft at the Science Summit 2024 that took place in conjunction with the 79th session of the United Nations’ General Assembly (UNGA79) in New York.

This participation came about as a result of the collaboration within a network of European organisations from the domains of biodiversity, ecology and engineering.

The organisations at the core of the network held a workshop on the combined role of science and technology in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). More precisely, the Kunmig-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM GBF) was selected as a testbed, whose stipulations can guide innovation across sectors and disciplines on the road to the realisation of specific SDGs.

The day-long programme featured 30 presentations that covered a variety of themes related to research priorities and technological instruments servicing the KM GBF.  Experts and stakeholders at the political, academic and professional level were involved in the proceedings, solidifying the network’s status as a hub for innovators in biodiversity conservation efforts.

Among the speakers was Boris Barov, Project Manager at Pensoft, who introduced the audience to the importance of open-science publishing and science communication as a stepping stone towards the fulfilment of biodiversity targets.

Barov elaborated on the key tenets and approaches ensuring that publishers like Pensoft are actively contributing to the preservation of the biosphere on a global level.

Those include:

  • disseminating conservation-centric research that uncovers findings and innovations critical to the effective implementation of the KM-GBF
  • supporting open access and knowledge sharing that guarantee the free availability of research outputs to any and all parties that need it
  • fostering an interface between science and policy that allows vital expertise to reach and inform decision-makers
  • championing inclusivity and equality that give indigenous communities a seat at the table

Additionally, Barov singled out Pensoft’s participation in the EU-funded research projects CO-OP4CBD, BioAgora and TRANSPATH as a testament to effective science communication that empowers stakeholder collaboration and engagement at the science-policy interface.

It is the intention of the network of organisations to collect the stakeholder input submitted during the event in a future whitepaper designed to outline its approach to facilitating biodiversity governance through research and technology.

Moreover, this is meant to be followed by an open call rallying international support for the integration of biodiversity conservation priorities into the post-SDG agenda of the UN.
